Crossranting - the Hek (Derropedia)

Crossrants are posts where I reference either another one of my blogs such as "My Life as a Grog" and "The Derropedia", or reference a post from one of my inspirations such as Timothy Ferguson's "Games From Folktales" ArM5 blog and/oor the various OSR blogs in my blogroll.

So it may be a while before I deal with this fully in the Ash Mire section of AtG or RttWWP, but I've linked across to my post on the Hek as half-derro over at my Derropedia blog.

The Hek are small humans. In the years following the Cataclysm they adapted to the harsh conditions of the Ash Mire. They are short and stocky. Body temperature is high (110F). To prevent water loss from sweating, they coat their bodies with a waxy substance derived from the roots of the epycott plant. They are able to survive on only a pint of water a day...

There's a fair bit of speculation in the post that I'll likely draw upon, the most relevant being the idea that the Hek are lesser derro refugees from beneath the Hellfurnaces (aka the Hadarna Mountains). The post is written from a PFRPG mechanics perspective and discusses the conversion of the Hek to a variant "Overburn Derro" subrace for use as PCs or antagonists in that system, based heavily on the lesser derro guidelines in AR12: Derro.

The more I think on it, however, the more I wonder at the Hek's origin story... if they are lesser derro adapted to sunlight that escaped from beneath the surface then perhaps they escaped from beneath the mountains where the Wind Walkers' Passages lie. If that is the case, the perhaps they are the remnants and descendants of the labourers used by Kaohetep to construct his engineering marvel.

Now that is an interesting concept to explore I think.
